An ecological survey assesses the presence of protected species, habitats, and biodiversity on or near a site. It ensures compliance with environmental legislation and helps prevent delays or legal issues during planning and development.
Ideally, as early as possible. Ecological factors can severely delay a project and cost a lot of money when considered too late. It is best to engage with ecology at the design phase of your plans to ensure smooth and timely delivery. This is when a plan may need to be changed where ecological factors could be problematic. Surveys are seasonally dependent, as many species are only detectable at certain times of the year (e.g., bat activity in summer, great crested newt surveys in spring). Early planning is crucial to avoid costly delays.
Depending on the site, surveys may include:
Preliminary Ecological Appraisal (PEA)
Protected Species Surveys (bats, badgers, newts, reptiles, birds, etc.)
Habitat and Biodiversity Net Gain assessments
Ecological Impact Assessments (EcIA)
Freshwater ecological surveys for crayfish, fish or freshwater pearl mussels
All projects and plans must include an Appropriate Assessment for planning
Local planning authorities require ecological assessments to ensure developments comply with wildlife protection laws and biodiversity requirements. Submitting the right surveys with planning applications reduces the risk of refusal.
If protected species are identified, mitigation strategies must be developed, which may include habitat creation, species relocation, or obtaining protected species licences. Working with an ecology consultant ensures legal compliance and smooth project delivery.
